A Navy Department communique stales: "On Monday morning, a formation of Army heavy bombers attacked the naval base at Paramushiru, which is the northernmost of the Kuril,) Islands. Fires were observed. Japanese ships in Paramushiru Straits were bombed and near hits were observed.” This is the lirst attack on Japan proper since the bombing of Tokio in April, 1942. The communique also reports bombing attacks on the main camp area at Gertrude Cove, on Kiska Island, in the Aleutians, while Japanese planes harmlessly bombed Canton Island. Mo casualties or damage was caused.
