DECLINING BIRTHRATE CAUSES TO BE PROBED (British Official Wli*gW) (10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, July 18. After seven hours’ debate in the House of Commons, in which members debated causes of the decline in the birthrate, and expressed concern at the danger to the country, the Minister of Health. Mr. Ernest Brown, announced that the Government intended to hold an inquiry on the broadest basis into the whole question of birthrate and population. Group-Captain Wright said that larger families should be encourage 1 by the provision of family allowances which the Government had accepted in principle and the provision *n houses with labour-saving devices bathe accommodation of families. Miss Eleanor ' P.athbone said tl o financial measures wore not enough 1.0 encourage larger families. She urged the raising of the status m motherhood.
