HUTT CONSTITUENCY

(P-.A.) WELLINGTON. July IC. A meeting of delegates selected Mr. N. P. Crot't as the National Party candidate for Hult, the Hon. W. Nash's constituency. Mr. Croft, who is 37 years of age, is head of N. P. Croft and Company, cartage contractors, of Lower Hult. As an amateur boxer. Mr. Croft- won the Wellington provincial middleweight and welterweight titles in 1930 and also the Canterbury middleweight title.

The fifth candidate announced to contest the Hamilton seat, at present held by Mr. C. A. Barrell (Government), is Warrant-Officer Alfred Ernest- Allen, who has been chosen as the representative of the Democratic Labour Party. Warrant-Officer Allen is 31. and after serving in the Middle East has been engaged as an army instructor in New Zealand.

A reply that he would stand as an Independent candidate for the Waikato seat has been given to a deputation by Mr. J. H. Penniket, a teacher on the staff of the Hamilton Technical High School. Mr - . Penniket contested the Waitomo seat as an Independent in 1935. The sitting member for Waikato is Mr. W. S. Goosman (National.) It is announced that Mrs. Gertrude Brooks will contest the Eden seat at the general election as an Independent" sponsored by the Ileal Democracy Movement. Mrs. Brooks has taken a keen interest in women’s organisations in Auckland and Dunedin. and is convener of the Auckland Public Opinion Group. She is a speaker on spiritualism. Mrs. Brooks is the sixth candidate to be announced for the Eden seat.

Captain David P. Howlcl.l, M.M., who contested the Wellington South seat as official National candidate al the 1938 election and who lias again been nominated for selection, announced at a meeting at Berhampore that due to his duties in the Armed Forces he was withdrawing from polities for the duration of the war. Mr. H. H. Oram has been selected as National Party candidate for the Manawatu seat, at present held by ! ho Hon. J. G. Cobbe, who is not seeking re-election.
