AUSTRALIAN FEARS

SPREAD OF MALARIA (9. a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 17. Australian civilians may be compelled to undergo examination and treatment for malaria. Fears have been held that soldiers returning from the New Guinea battle zone might introduce the disease into Australia and cases of such infection have been reported already. The State Premiers’ conference, held here, investigated the position and authorised compulsory treatment. A special report by Sir Earle Page recommended the eradication of swamp breeding grounds in the Townsville and Cairns areas. The work will be put in hand.
