THEFT FROM WHARF
•‘PILLAGING INCREASING’
“For some time pillaging on the Auckland wharves has been on the increase,” said Sub-Inspector .Joyce, when Robert Caledon Moore, aged 38, waterside worker, admitted the theft of 10 pairs of leather gloves, two cartons of cigarettes and a mosquito net, valued at £5 2s. Mr. Joyce said that shortly before 4 o'clock in the morning a constable found accused carrying a sugar bag in Quay street. The articles were pillaged. Accused was a member of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union. “This is an offence which is regarded seriously, and is punished by imprisonment," said the magistrate. Mr. J. H. Luxford. As accused was a first, offender the maximum sentence would not be imposed. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.
