NEW DEEP WELL

TARANAKI OIL BORING DEVON No. 2 ABANDONED In the further quest for oil in the Taranaki Province, a new deep well is to be drilled 30 miles from New Plymouth. This announcement was made in Gisborne to-day by the New Zealand Petroleum Company, Limited, together with the announcement that the Devon No. 2 well has been abandoned at a depth of G177f1. This is one of a series in both Taranaki and Gisborne districts which has been abandoned since the resumption of renewed activity towards the end of 1938. The Devon No. 2 well had only a short life, being commenced early in May. Drilling proceeded rapidly, and within 10 days had reached a depth of 3032 ft., at which point tests were carried out before further work was undertaken.

The New Zealand Petroleum Company. Limited, has issued the following report:—“Devon No. 2 well in the New Plymouth area has been abandoned, "having reached a depth of 0177 ft. Test for oil and gas on sandstone horizons intersected proved negative. Following upon a gravity survey and much detailed geographical work, including structural drilling, a deep well is to be drilled at Uruti, a locality some 30 miles by airline from New Plymouth and near the main coastal road. The drilling plant is now being dismantled at Devon No. 2, and work on the road to the new drilling site is in hand.’’
