Mrs. Ci. Gaddum, Waingake, is staying al Wainui Beach. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Smith returned from Wellington yesterday. Mrs. G. Utting is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. T. Utting, Haronga road. Mrs. L. Jex-Blake, Mangapoike, is visiting Mrs. G. Gaddum at Wainui Beach. Mrs. K. Ivissling, Harris street, has returned from an extended visit to Auckland. Miss A. Corlett, Hawera, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Corlett, Kanaka naia. Mrs. A. N. Grigg, M.P., who has been a patient in a private hospital in Christchurch, has returned to her home at Surrey Hills, Canterbury. Miss M. Clapcott, of the staff of Woodford House School, is spending her vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Clapcott, Cobden street. Mrs. M. McDonald, Kanakanaia, who has been visiting Dunedin, returned to Gisborne by plane and is at present the guest of Mrs. H. G. Wellborne, Kelvin road. News has been received by Miss Lorna Sheen, A.R.A.D., of the following successes gained by her. pupils at the Palmerston North Competitions now in progress:—Classical Ballet Dance, 10 and under 13: Audrey Illingworth, 1. Tap Dance, 8 and under 10: Shirley Illingworth, 1. Tap Dance, 10 and under 12; Audrey Illingworth,'2. Hornpipe, 13 and under 17: Annett Shields, 2. Sean Triubhnis, 13 and under 17 : Annett Shields, v.h.c. Another successful competitor was Eva Rodgers, who gained second place in the recitation for girls, 9 and under 12. ENGAGEMENT Nicol—Wright.—Mr. and Mrs. J. Ryan, Masterton, announce the engagement of their daughter, Joan Gwendolene, to Gunner William Stanley Nicol, of a New Zealand military camp. Miss Wright is the only daughter of Mrs. J. Ryan and the Into Mr. W. E. Wright. Gunner Nicol is the third son of Mrs. L. Nicol and the late Mr. H. Nicol, Patutahi. POVERTY BAY LADIES' GOLF CLUB A bogey match figured on the programme for the members of the Poverty Bay Ladies* Golf Club yesterday afternoon, when the best card, 3 down, was handed in by Mrs. Swainson, Playinfi in the week-end Stableford bogey match, Mrs. T. J. Corkery, with a 28 Stableford, returned the best score. NATIONAL RESERVE MEETS At the monthly meeting of the Gisborne branch of: the Women’s National Reserve, held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon, the president, Mrs. W. E. Gofre, submitted a report in regard to the reserve’s revised observance of Anznc Day as the result of the alteration in the time of the service at the Soldiers’ Memorial. CHEERY DANCE The dances organised by the Gisborne Squadron of the Air Training Corps are deservedly popular, and consequently the City Hall presented an animated scene on Monday night. Mrs. W. Thomson’s orchestra supplied the music and guests were responsible for the extras. A delicious supper, contributed by the parents of the members of the corps, was served under the direction of Mrs. Iv. B. Garland, Mrs. P. Evans and Mrs. Le Bas, with the assistance of the members. The table decorations were artistically carried out with richly-tinted mixed flowers. SISTER GUILD ENTERTAINED The monthly meeting of St. John’s Ladies’ Guild, held in St. John’s Church, Mangapapa, on Tuesday afternoon, took the form of a social gathering at which members of the Kaiti Anglican Ladies’ Guild were entertained. The chair was taken by Mrs. A. V. Clare, who extended a warm welcome to the guests. Three diverting competitions were enjoyed, and . the . winners, Mesdames F. R. Hill and Burch and Miss Smale, were suitably rewarded. Afternoon tea was served under the direction of Mesdames McNab, Wallis and E. Troweii, at tables charmingly decorated with chrysanthemums, combined wiih autumn foliage. TARUHERU SOCIAL CLUB Dancing to music supplied by Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Davis provided a finale to the fortnightly progressive five-hundred party organised by the Taruheru Ladies’ Social Club at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Biggar, Cameron road, on Tuesday night. Eleven tables were engaged and the games wer4 supervised by Mrs. Biggar. Honours were secured by. Mrs. T. Gooch and Mi*. J. Elvers, other prizes being awarded to Mrs. Heaslip and Mr. T. Mclntyre. Supper was served informally. A progressive five-hundred party, .also in aid of the funds of the Taruheru Ladies’ Social Club, took place at the home of, Mr. and Mrs. Crawforth, Ward street, on Saturday nuight, when. play was enjoyed at four tables. The successful competitors were Mrs. Carter and Mr. Holden, other prizes being handed to Mrs. Grantham and Mr. Cook. The prizes were donated by Mrs. J. Watt.
