SUPPLIES TO RUSSIA

SECRET ALLIED PACT CANADA’S AID TO ALLIES (10.30 a.m.) OTTAWA, May 12. Britain, the United States and Canada are negotiating a secret protocol setting forth the supplies to be furnished to Russia for the year beginning July 1, according to information given to the Canadian House of Commons by the Prime Minister, Mr W. L, Mackenzie King, who added that by becoming a party to the protocol, Canada was able to express again her deep appreciation of Russia’s contribution to the Allied cause and the vital importance of the Soviet front. Canada, under the gift-to-Britain arrangement made last year, gave Britain £172,250,000 worth of munitions and £77,750,000 worth of foodstuffs and raw materials, but the actual shipments during the gift period totalled £360,000,000, said the Minister of Finance, Mr. J. L. Ilsley. Of the shipments to Britain, supplies valued at £15,250,000 were shipped to Russia, including tanks, armoured vehicles, shells, ammunition, and base metals. An additional £17,750,000 worth of mechanical transport was transferred to New Zealand, Australia, and other parts of the sterling area.
