STORTFQRD LODGE PENS BREEDING EWES SLACK (0.C.) HASTINGS, Feb. I. Lambs commanded a strong market at the Stortford Lodge stock sale yesterday, when high values were realised for well-condi-tioned lines, 19s being reached for several liens. The yarding of 8000 included a better top of lambs than those penned in cue two previous sale:;. iiie top-priced lines of woolly lambs were mostly oil high country, while good, medium drafts off similar country brought to 17s. Small grown anu light but hardy, realised 12s fid. Best shorn linos made His yd, others to Ms Gd. VV’ethers sold on a strong market, good two-tooths making 22s ;kl, and adult sheep 23s 3d. Breeding ewes were slow to trade. Early shorn two-tooths made 23s 3d, light and very mixed 19s 3d, low-mouthed five-year-olds, 1 is 2d to 12s 3d. Despite the small yarding* of fat sheep* values wore easier for ewes ami lambs. Competition was confined mainly to two buyers. Average wethers made 22s Bid to 23s -Id, lighter 24s Id to 22s -Id. Small Souttidowncross two-tooths made It's Bid. Best lambs brought 22s id to z4:> id. others, lighter, to 21s 4d. Most of the finished ewes were overweights am! marie fiom 12s -Id to 13s -id. others 11s Id to 11 s Hid. the small eiury oi store cattle met with keen competition, selling fully on a par with late high rates. Young A.A. bullocks, lair-framed and in good store order, brought £lo lGs. Throe-year Hereford steers showing breeding, dehorned and extra well conditioned, were unsold at .£lO Us. Light conditioned 16-month Hereford steers, poorly bred, made £5 Bis. From ITiterino 16month A.A. steers, mixed ill size and oil hard country, brought £5 18s. Fairly grown similarly-aged steers, doing well, made £7. Mixed-bred light, empty cows just weaned their calves, realised £4 17s 6(1. Cow beef made improved values on that of last week. Approximately 50 per cent of the yarding of 170 head were finished pens, the remainder being out-of-condition lots. The main entry of ox. was from Tufira, of handy-weight young A.A. bullocks, ranging from X l2 3s 6d to i‘l.3 Ss Gd and averaging 35s to 36s per 1001 b., which made better buying than most of the heifers. Average cows brought from £7 18s Gd to £8 12s 6d. being over 30s per KiOlb. Second quality lots unfinished made to XI 11s. Top quality Hereford heifers averaged 37s to 38s per 1001 b., ranging from £lO lls Od to £ll 18s Gd for the heavier pens and £9 Ss Od to £lO 11s for a lighter range. Small prime twoyear Hereford heifers brought £7 18s Gd. Vealers made to £4.
