OCCUPIED EUROPE GERMAN PRECAUTIONS HOME GUARD IN FRANCE (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (2 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 17. All German civilians and officials in France are compelled to undergo a minimum of a fortnight’s special military training in barracks as a precaution against the opening of a second front, declared Mr. B.' S. Townroe, of the Ministry of Information. They will find a German home guard within the hordes of German officials who have descended on France. From Moscow, the Tass News Vgency reports that the Germans have ordered General Christiansen, commander in Holland, to transfer the headquarters of the occupation forces in Holland from The Hague to an undisclosed place near the eastern frontier of Holland.
An Istanbul, message reports that several Greek hostages were shot in Crete after an invasion scare. One hundred prominent persons were arrested and are being held as hostages. The Germans carried out parachutist. exercises in a lonely valley. A rumour arose that a British invasion had begun. The Greeks rushed to welcome the British, but rushed away again when they found that the parachutists were Germans.
