HOCKEY SHIELD WON
POVERTY BAY’S BID NAPIER BEATEN 3-0 The Poverty Bay women’s hockey repre sentntive team won the Lady Carroll Shiel. from Napier in Napier on Saturday by threi goals to nil. Napier- had held the shiel. for two years, having captured Ihc troph, from Poverty Bay late in 1940. The Poverty Bay team was the same a: that announced at the beginning of last week, and each member played well up to expectations, combining admirably and with no individual player warranting mentio:. above another. The team was well balanced, being effective both in attack ano defence. After winning the toss, Poverty Bay chose to attack on a greasy end of the field, leaving the better turf for the final offensive ii. the second half. Play in the first half wa. fairly even, slightly in Poverty Bay’s favour. The opening score came in . the first 1» minutes, when Miss N. Murray, left wing, centred to Miss E. Rich, captain, who madno mistake with the shot. Mrs. Algie, a former Poverty Bay representative, playe., her usual splendid game at full-back, and held up further Poverty Bay attacks unti. half-lime. Just before the interval, Mis. T. Whitehead, right wing, put a splendi. shot into the goal, hut she was outside the circle when the hit was taken. On the better turf in the second half. Poverty Bay forwards put up a good performance, but the Napier goalkeeper gave a splendid exhibition, stopping everything that came her way. The Poverty Bay goalie, on the other hand, had practically nothing to do. With the challengers only one goal up, the position became exciting almost to the end, but 10 minutes before the close Miss Whitehead centred a fast ball, which rose from the ground into the circle, where Miss M. H. Brown, centre forward, connected in mid-air and had the ball in the net with a speed that gave the goalkeeper no chance to save. Five minutes later, the game was safe for Poverty Bay, when Miss Rich scored from a corner hit, making tile final tally three —nil. In the men’s game, Poverty Bay defeated Napier by six goals to two. The half-time score was one—nil in favour of the visitors, and half-way through the second spell they led by three—two, but rattled on three more quick ones before the close. The Poverty Bay goals were well distributed among Edwards, Norman, Ilingston, Greig. Taylor and Arnold. '
