THE NORTH MAIL

DISCONTINUANCE LIKELY WARTIME "DIFFICULTY The prospects of being unable to maintain the running of the rnail lorries between Gisborne and the railhead at Taneatua have been discussed in Gisborne recently, it is understood. , Great difficulty in obtaining tyres has resulted in the cutting down of many services throughout the Dominion recently to an even nmre drastic form than was necessary when the petrol rationing came into fpree. and it is believed that, if this service is not discontinued almost immediately, it cannot remain for a great length of time. Those who support its discontinuance point out that the nighWmah through Napier will connect with the Limited express from Wellington and reach Auckland at 7 a.m., .this being ample time to connect with the postal deliveries. At present, the mail to the north, arrives at Auckland at 6 p.m. on the day after posting, and' at that time is of no value to *? u ®: iness people, except a few who might clear their private boxes after that hour. Therefore, it is argued, the extia 1 night taken in travel will not be oh any general inconvenience either JO private or business people. Also, it is not thought that there will be any inconvenience to places along the route of the present northward mail run, for'alternative methods will toe found, no doubt, to carry the much lighter mail necessary.
