RELEASE APPEALS

EAST COAST COMMISSION WORK FOR FARMERS Several appeals for release from camp and one against general service were lodged by the East Coast Commission at a sitting of the Gisborne Armed Forces , Appeal Board to-day. The camp release was in respect of C. Mulligan, J. Crawford. L. K. \Yykes, farmhands, and H. J. H. Rqbprtson, teamster, and the appeal agqinst general service was for E. F. Burcji, station manager. Evidence was submitted by J. S. Jessep and Harold Symes. The formpr said that Burch had done three months’ training, after which he had undergone an operation. When he reported to the army office to be notified of his medical grading, he was told that he would be informed in the near future. The information came, on Saturday that he was to report an camp on Thursday. The witness added that this was most unsatisfactory, as the reservist was a manager on an isolated station where lambing was just starting. It was impossible to replace him. Harold Symes said , that Mulligan, Wykes and Crawford were all in camp at present, not having been released with the farm-wovkers. The witness added that it seemed that the conir mission was appealing for a large number of its employees, but the hardship was there just the same. “It is because the commission did not appeal in the first instance,” said the chairman, MV. F. R. Ball, “that this position has arisen. The board fully understands it.” Leave to February 28, 1943, was recommended for Robertson and Mulligan, the former to join the Home Guard; to January 31, 1943, for Crawford, and to December 31, 1942, with a condition that he join the Home Guard, for Wykes. In the case of Burch, the board decided to dismiss the appeal, the. reservist not to be called before February 28, 1943.
