ENEMY AIRCRAFT ASSAULTS ON CONVOY MALTA FIGHTERS* TOLL (By Telegraph—Prcsn Assn.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) (2 p.m.) RUGBY, Aug. 10. Axis aircraft attacking the Mediterranean convoy on the last lap to Malta suffered severely at the hands of file Royal Air OFrce. Thirteen were shot down into Hie sea, states a Cairo message. On Thursday when the main convoy came into harbour, thq Royal Air Force shot down seyen, having already destroyed six approaching the island. The success of the air operations cannot be judged solely by the number of planes destroyed. ‘ For the past few days the Royal Air Force have been busy giving support to Malta and by reconnaissance have kept a close watch over shipping. As soon as the convoy came within the fighters’ range of the island. Spitfires took oft from the first light to dusk. The- protection of the convoy at this stage was chip to the Royal Air Force fighters' complete superiority ancl the superb air planning and organisation of the flying and ground crews. - , ■ -
