Lytton road, who has been on an extended visit to Dunedin, has returned to Gisborne. Sister Ena Barron, of the New Zealand Atony Nursing Service, who recently returned from overseas, has been staying with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Barron, Tolaga Bay, and is at present visiting her father, Mr. W. Barron, Waiohika. ENGAGEMENT Richards —Baker.—An engagement is announced between George Clement, third son of Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Richards, Waotu, 'uiaruru. and Olivene Margaret, second daughter of the late Mr. ami Mrs. H. C. oaker, Tolaga Bay. BASKETBALL DANCE The funds of the Public Service Basketball Club benefited as a result of a successful dance held by the members in the Selvyn dull on Tuesday night.. There- was a large attendance of dancing enthusiasts, and everyone entered into the festive spirit of the occasion. The music was supplied by Mrs. W. Thomson, and an extra was contributed by a guest. SUCCESSFUL HOME GUARD DANCE On Wednesday night the Manutuke uidt of llie Home Guard held a successful dance in tile Manutuke Memorial Hall for the benefit of its funds. The music was supplied by Mr. A. PilkingLoa’s orchestra, and extras were contributed by Messrs. C. Swann and M. L. Barber. A delicious supper was served at flowerleaked tables in the supper-room adjoining, the ballroom, the members of the unit waitng on the guests. VISITOR ENTERTAINED Three tables of bridge were arranged recently by Mrs. H. I). Humphrey and Mrs. A. a. Salmon, at the home of the former, Kaiti esplanade, for Mrs. H. S. Irvine, Wellington, for whom a pleasant round of parties has been given by her Gisborne friends. Mrs. W. Cauruthers secured the highest score and a prize also was awarded to Mrs. R. N. Poulgrain. Supper was served informally A graceful frock of black crepe was won. by Mrs. Humphrey, and Mrs. Salmon’s smart frock of black eloque was accented with touches of diamante. Mrs. Irvine wore a becoming frock of navy blue Swiss Romaine. POVERTY BAY GARDENING CIRCLE At the well-attended monthly meeting of the Poverty Bay Gardening Circle, held it, Le Grand Cafe on Thursday, the president, Mrs. W. Neai, spoke at length in regard to the, final arrangements for the spring flowei show, which the circle is organising for Friday, September 11, for patriotic-purposes. An appreciative audience followed with keen interest the prtistic demonstration given by Mrs. Posijillo of the decorative value, for a shelf, of a tail and also a squat, jug of flowers. A beautiful display o' spring flowers, effectively staged, was an other feature of the meeting. .The monthly competitions resulted:—Two vases of bulbous flowers.—Mrs. E. E. Jenkinson, 1; Mesdames E. E. Jenkinson and C. G. Crone, equal, 2; Mrs. B. Dodge, 3. One vase ol' Lnchenalia.—Mrs. S. H. Brown, 1 Mrs. A. R. Smith, 2. Bowl of Flowers, (one variety).—Mrs. E. E. Jenkinson, 1; Miss McGhee, 2; Mesdames, F. A. McFndyen and Poswillo, equal. 3. FORTNIGHTLY MEETING OF W.W.S.A. It was reported at the fortnightly committee meeting of the Gisborne branch oi the Women's War Service Auxiliary held i:. Hie W.W.S.A. depot, Gladstone road, oi. Wednesday night, that the first of a series of obstetrical talks, for the purpose of in structi»n in the event of an emergency, had been given by Matron Avenell, of the Edward Murphy Home. The talk will b continued at the depot on Thursday next af 3.30 p.m., when women assistant wardens are specially asked to attend. The urgent necessity for the enrolment, o, women as assistant wardens and also girl, for communications was stressed by tin members. It was stated that the W.W.S.A. was taking, an active part in the sale ol comfort coupons. The resignation, owing to business pressure of the lion, secretary, Miss E. Matthews, was accepted with regret, and Mrs. 1). A. Wells, who has the leisure necessary to carry out the duties, was appointed her successor.
