ARREARS OF TAXES

REDUCTION FROM WAGES Income tax payers who are in arrears have received notice from the Commissioner of Taxes that unless full settlement is made within 14 days it would be necessary for the commissioner to require the taxpayer’s employer in pursuance of the Finance Act (No. 2), 1942, io make deductions on account of such overdue tax from any wages or salary due to the taxpayer. A copy ol' the relevant section of' the Act is enclosed with each notification. Objection to the provision in the national service emergency regulations, by which employers can be required to collect union dues from employees in essential industries, and the powers given the Commissioner of Taxes to require tax defaults to be deducted from wages, has been made to the Government by the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
