WOMEN FOR FORCES

DISAPPOINTING RESPONSE Dissatisfaction with the progress of the recruiting appeal for women to join the armed forces was expressed by Miss A. Buckley, secretary of the Christchurch district committee of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary. She said that 36G women had made application for enrolment up to July 28, but this number would fill only the initial requirements of the army. Two hundred women were needed for antiaircraft duties by the end of August, while women were still wanted for clerical duties and as signallers. Also not all of the 366 women enrolled would be available, as those engaged in essential industries, between 20 and 30 per cent at present, had to have their cases considered by the manpower officer, 'and others would not pass the medical examination.
