CLERGY CRITICAL

PARADES ON SUNDAY UNITS OF HOME GUARD CHURCH WORK. STOPPED (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The compulsory attendance of Home Guard parades on Sundays was deplored by members of the Christchurch Presbytery at a meeting yesterday. Members complained that church workers were unable to carry out their Christian duties because of parades and that the parades, were seriously interfering with Christian work in the community. The Rev. L. M. Rogers said that Sunday parades in other services, such as the Air Training Corps, were also likely to become compulsory, and such a step would smash Bible class work and undermine Christian work -as a whole. The presbytery decided to refer the matter to the public questions committee. Mr. A. J. McEldowney opposed the resolution, saying that there was no more crime in attending Sunday parades than in taking part in operations overseas on Sundays.
