DOMINION PEOPLE REDUCED BEER POTENCY MINISTER’S STATEMENT (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. It is reported that regulations will soon he issued giving the Minister of Customs power to order the breweries to brew beer to 1036 specific gravity. The Minister of Customs, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, questioned last night about this reported decision of the War Cabinet, declined to comment. “Unquestionably,” Mr. Nordmeyer replied, when asked whether a reduction of the alcohol content had caused an improvement in the community’s sobriety. Mr. Nordmeyer said that police reoorts indicated a general improvement. It had been said that was due to less beer being consumed, but. he believed the improvement was due to the lower alcohol content. Figures were not available yet on which any announcement could toe substantiated that a smaller quantity of beer was being drunk.
