LAND FOR SOLDIERS

NO GREAT DEMAND AREAS AVAILABLE (P.R.) WELLINGTON, .this day. If he had any influence, no big land owner would be allowed to exploit the Government in its acquisition of land for returned soldiers, declared the acting Minister of Lands, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, in the House of Representatives. An Opposition member; Everybody agrees. The Minister said .that land was available now for returned men. There were between 300,000 and 400,000 acres of Crown land in different districts ready for settlement by returned soldiers. No land ’ had been purchased last year because of the difficulty in maintaining it and fertilising it, labour and fertilisers being In short supply. The Government had land available, but there had been no great demand for it. The settlement of returned soldiers was more a matter for the Rehabilitation Council than for the Lands and Survey Department.
