Town Clock Wrong; “I do not know why our clock is always wrong,” stated Dr. A. L. Singer at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, when he said that the town clock had been three minutes fast for some time. State Housing Inspection "The State housing block is well worth an inspection,” stated Mr. li. H. De Costa, at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, when it was mentioned that the council had taken over the roads in the block. The town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, was deputed to arrange an inspection at some suitable date. Civic Potatoes In view of the Government's request that people in the Dominion should grow their own vegetables as far as possible, the Wairoa Borough Council has decided to plant suitable reserves in potatoes as a small part of its war effort. Mr. M. J. Gemmell was authorised, at a special meeting of the council, to supervise this work. Park Domain Lease A surrender of the present lease of the Park Domain, held by Messrs. T. A. N. Corson and R. G. Sceats, was recommended by the Gisborne Borough Council, sitting last night as the Makaraka Domain Board, providing an offer of Mr. E. Fitzgerald on the same terms, £165 a year for five years, was accepted. Late Chief Judge A motion of condolence with the family of the late Mr. R. N. Jones, former Chief Judge of the Native Land Court and Under-Secretary of Native Affairs, was passed by the Gisborne Borough Council last night. The Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, said that the late Mr. Jones was a member of the council from 1900 to 1903. Gisborne’s Sympathy Sympathy with the towns which suffered damage in the recent earthquake in the southern half of the North Island was expressed at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council. The Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, said that councillors felt keenly for those in the damaged areas, and, on his motion, the council decided to write to that effect to the Mayors of the towns affected. Appeal For Town Clerk As it appears practically impossible to obtain a suitable- applicant for the position of temporary town clerk in Wairoa, the Wairoa Borough Council has decided to lodge an appeal for its town clerk, Mr. C. M. Turner, who has been called up for military service. Mr. Turner, in addition to his position as chief executive, is also a key man in the E.P.S. The appeal is to be lodged on the grounds of public interest. Woollies Appreciated Writing from what is reputedly one of the coldest military camps in the Dominion, a member of tne armed forces, in a letter to the editor of the Herald, expresses appreciation to the women of the district who were responsible for the donations of balaclavas, scarves and mittehs presented to the men on their departure for camp. “They are greatly appreciated by us,” the writer concluded.' Adjustment of Level An adjustment of the level of Craw* ford road facing the' loading bank at the freezing works was sought in a letter from the Gisborne Refrigerating Company, Limited, to the Gisborne Borough Council, which met last night. The bank was 39ft. in length. The borough engineer, Mr. G. F. Clapcott, said that the road was nearly two chains wide at that point, and the proposed alteration would bring a steep slope down to an easy grade. Garrison Hall Property For the purpose of securing an improvement to the Garrison Hall frontage, the Gisborne Borough Council last night appointed a .deputation to wait on the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, on his next visit to Gisborne with a request that the Government should purchase the section on the corner of Fitzherbert street and Stout streets. Those appointed to the deputation were the Mayor, Mr. N. H. Bull, Messrs. J. H. Hall, H. H. De Costa, G. D. Muirhead, R. Morse, and Dr. A. L. Singer. Military Appointments Recent military appointments published in the Gazette include the following: Captain W. Bourke, Reserve of Officers, Hawke’s Bay Regiment, to be captain (temp.), dated April 20; Captain (temp.) E. R. Black, M.C-, to be major (temp.), Hawke’s Bay Regiment, dated May 1; Second-Lieutenant W. Ngata, late Second N.Z.E.F., from the Hawke’s Bay Regiment, to be lieutenant (temp.) with seniority from May 1, 1941, and to be captain (temp.), dated June 1. Home Guard appointments include Henry Loftus Primrose, to be captain, from August 1, 1941. Kaiti Beach Service Reporting to the Gisborne Borough Council last night on the recent decision to continue the sanitary service to Kaiti Beach shacks on condition that the occupiers paid for the service, the town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, stated that only one of the signatories to the petition requesting the contiririatiori Of the service agreed to pay, and consequently the service was discontinued to those who had refused to pay. Councillors urged that the -charge should be compulsory. The council agreed to defer further consideration of the matter, it being suggested that the Health Department might take action. Slaughtering- Charges Representatives or the Master Butchers’ Association and the Gisborne Borough Council met recently for the purpose of discussing matters affecting the abattoirs. Following a discussion on the fees charged for slaughtering, the town clerk was instructed to review the fees, particularly in regard to pigs, a large pronortion slaughtered being heavy baconers, the treatment of which involved much time. Reporting on the discussion at last night’s meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council, the abattoirs committee stated that When the town clerk’s proposals were readv the matter would be discussed further and the committee’s proposals' placed before the council,
