LIQUOR BREWING
NON-ESSENTIAL IN N.Z. BRITISH & U.S. CONTRAST MODERATE POLICY URGED (P.A.I AUCKLAND, this day. The contrast between the brewing industry in New Zealand and that in America and Britain was emphasised by Mr. J. H. Kelliher, managing director of Dominion Breweries, Ltd., at the annual meeting of shareholders. He said that while, unfortunately, brewing in New Zealand was not regarded as an essential industry, the United States Government had granted the industry in America priority of rating, placing it among the food processing industries essential to the war effort, while in Britain the Government had recognised the necessity of beer in war time and had given every possible assistance to enable the breweries to maintain their normal production. The panic measures introduced in Australia to control liquor production and consumption had already proved a dismal failure and had been revised. He felt sure the majority of the people in New Zealand favoured a moderate policy along similar lines. Mr. Kelliher said that over 70 per cent of the original brewery staff had joined the armed forces, and others had been transferred to essential industries.
