BURNED TO DEATH

AGED MAORI’S FATE WHARE DESTROYED (P.A.) OPOTIKI, this day. An old Maori, Mr. Pene Ngamoko, aged over 90 years, was burned to death yesterday morning when his whare was burned. A neighbour noticed smoke coming from the house. When the door was pushed open, the whare burst into flames. The smoke was so thick and the heat so intense that the neighbour was powerless to do anything. When the fire died down, the remains of the old man were found, apparently lying on the bed. The body was practically incinerated. Mr. Ngamoko was a heavy cigarette smoker and was subject lo epileptic fits, It is considered probable that he took a fit while smoking.
