MATAWAI NEWS

A meeting of hill country women was held recently in the Women’s Institute liall in Matawai to discuss the grouping of the whole district for patriotic purposes. _ Mrs. H. Li. Twistlnton presided. A motion to wot It as at present was carried, but an amendment was passed that Otoko and Here districts combined by taking a shop day together in Gisborne, but if not successful to return to the former arrangement. A proposal to hold local shop days at Motu and Matawai also was turned down.

Mr. and Mrs. F. Bare, sett., are spending a holiday as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. Mortleman. Leading Wireless Mechanic A. 0. Dare and Mrs. Dare spent a few days’ leave too. returning north last week.—Mrs. P. Jacobs, Waingake, is paying a round of visits in Matawai, having returned yesterday from a short stay with Mrs. G. Hamilton, Okiorc.—The Misses M. and A. Baird and Miss A. James. Telnga Bay, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Baird recently.—Mrs. W. A. Man gin and Alison were the guests of Air. and Mrs. K. Mnrley for the week-end. The rainfall for May was much heavier than usual, 7.18 in. being recorded on 18 days. The heaviest fall was 1.42 in. on May 31. In May, 1941, there were 12 wet dnys, with 2.87 in. of rain, •St. Mary’s Ladies’. Guild met in the Women’s Institute hall on Thursday afternoon, the first meeting for three months owing, to the secretary’s illness. Nine members were present, Airs. G. R. Robb presiding. All's. *H. Bulst read an article from the Church Gazette on the campaign for Christian order. The next discussion group meeting will he held at “The Vicarage” on Tuesday week. Afternoon tea was served by the non-knitters. The sympathy of many friends in this and the Koranga district is extended to Airs. S: Grantham and family in the tragic sudden death of their husband and father, who have been residents of Koranga for many years.
