COAST RAINFALL
HEAVIER FALLS Heavier rainfall than had previously been experienced this year was recorded at all East Coast meteorological stations last month. At Matarau station the total for the month exceeded more than half the total for the year to date. Although last month's rain was heavy, and at all stations higher than last year’s figures, the total for the year does not compare favourably with the total for the corresponding period last year. The return from Matarau station, Matakaoa County, indicates that this station recorded the heaviest falls, as ]4.3oin. was the total for the mouth. This figure was registered on 15 days, the heaviest. 24-hour fall being on May .15, when 5.55 in. was recorded. This total is considerably in excess of that for the same period last year, when on 12 days only 3.72 in. fell. The total rainfall from January 1 to May 31 is 22.58 in., compared with 41.50 in. for last year. Uuaugarehu station, near Tokomaru Bay, reports a total of 8.22 in. for the month, compnred with ,97in. for the same period last year. Cast month’s rain fell on 13 days, while for the previous year it was registered on seven days. The heaviest 24hour fall last month was recorded on May 31, the figure being 2.45 in. This year’s total of 24.95111., is slightly above that of last year, 22.27 in. At Palcihiroa station, Waiapu County, 12.54 in. fell on 11 days in comparison with .94in. on seven days last year. The heaviest 24-hour fall'was 3.,35in., which was recorded on May 15. This year’s total is now 30.53 in., compared with 33.66 in. over the same period laßt year. Rainfall recorded at Waeroro station. Tikitiki, totalled 10.28 in. Rain fell on 11 days and the heaviest fall was 4.35 in. on May 15. The totnl for the year to date is 26.39 in., compared with 30.10 in. recorded for the first five months last year.

Last month’s heaviest fall was recorded on May 15, when 1.86 in. fell. The total for the year is 13.32iu., in comparison with 24.83 in. for last year.
