GROW VEGETABLES

REQUEST TO HOSPITALS An appeal from the DirectorGeneral of Health placed before the Cook Hospital Board yesterday urged that each institution should be selfsupporting in the matter of vegetables, particularly potatoes, and that all available property for vegetablegrowing should be utilised. The managing-secretary, Mr. C. A. Harries, said that three acres were cultivated at the Memorial Home which produced large supplies of vegetables, including 128 cwt. of potatoes. He said that the present garden facilities did not provide sufficient vegetables for the hospital, which had to spend £4OO or £SOO a year on the purchase of vegetables from outside. The farm committee was asked to make additional ground available for vegetables.
