Frost The lowest temperatures experienced in Gisborne this year were recorded during the week-end, representing a sudden change from the mild conditions which continued unusually late. The minimum temperature on the grass at the aerodrome yesterday morning was 31.8 degrees, only .5 of a degree above the frost level, while the minimum temperature on the grass this morning was 33.2 degrees. Cave of Motor Tyres A suggestion that more than usual care should be taken of motor tyres was given in Gisborne to-day, when it was stated that in view of the ban on the sale of tyres for private use motorists should take all steps to make their tyres last as long as possible. Excessive speed, sudden braking and quick acceleration were among the main factors in tyre wear, and if a motorist had the least suspicion that lie had developed a puncture he should stop to make certain, for running on a punctured tyre would soon ruin it. Also, tyres, should be kept fully inflated, arid any small: cuts should be attended to immediately in order to prevent deterioration. Naval Casualty In a recent list of naval casualties is the name of Ordinary Signalman Robert Mortimer, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Mortimer, Auckland, and formerly of Gisborne. Signalman Mortimer is reported missing. He was educated at the Kaiti School and Gisborne High School, and was in the Public Works Department's office in Gisborne prior to joining the navy. He was a keen member of the sea scouts in Gisborne, and was one of 20 of the scouts throughout New Zealand selected for naval training. He entered the navy in June last year, and was engaged in the Singapore battle, from which he emerged safely. The official advice that he is missing is the only word received of him since then.
