Sports and Flying
Followers of certain sports have been proved to make better air pilots on the whole than followers of other sports, according to statements made in Auckland by the chairman of the air crew selection committee of the Royal New Zealand Air Force* Squadron-Leader. A. C. McArthur, tq intending recruits. For instance, a number of yachtsmen were told that their aquatic prowess was in their favour as pilots, as it gave them a useful sense of balance. On the contrary, boxing was held to be one of the worst of popular sports for pilots, because clenching of the fist for punching was inclined to make a man heavy of hand. Another question frequently asked, presumably-to judge the applicant’s sense of balance, was! “Have you ever done ahy ski-ing?”
