PRIVATE MOTOR CARS
REVIEW OF LICENSES ONLY ESSENTIAL NEEDS (Cor Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Minister of Supply, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, announced that serious reductions are being made immediately in petrol allowances. First, no petrol will be available until further notice for pleasure running. Secondly, petrol will not be available for any purpose which may not be regarded as absolutely essential in the public interest. The present system of deliveries of foodstuffs .and essential commodities must be substantially curtailed. The Goverment realises that these restrictions will seriously affect the livelihoods of many people, but the steps being taken are the results of necessity. The Government regards it as essential to national security that our present stocks be conserved to the utmost possible extent. A large number of private car owners probably have considerable petrol in their tanks, and the Government asks that they conserve this petrol for themselves or their country in the emergency and refrain from any pleasure or holiday uinning in the meantime. From the time of this announcement no coupons are available until further notice, and all allowances for pleasure launches are cancelled. Reduced or Cancelled
All licenses will need to be drastically reduced or cancelled. Over the week-end all cards were being called n from resellers. It will therefore be necessary for license holders to present their licenses for review before further supplies may be drawn. All existing special licenses are cancelled and the holders of these licenses should call at the nearest district oil fuel controller in order that their cases may be considered. Public passenger services are being mmediately reviewed with the object of eliminating any non-essential services. Everything is being done to make the change-over as smoothly as possible, and license holders can materially assist by delaying their applications for review as long as they can in order that the most urgent cases may be dealt with first. The action now being taken, the Minister concluded, is necessary in the interests of '.he security of the nation.
