PART OF WORLD FIGHT
BATTLE OF LIBYA BRITISH CONFIDENCE (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, Dec. 1. While the Russian blow to General Von Kleist’s Panzer army in recapturing Rostov is naturally “frontpage news” in. the London press to-day, the importance of the new Libyan battle is the subject of keen comment. The fighting was last night described by the Cairo spokesman as being “as heavy as any so far.” Writing in the Observer, Mr. J. L Garvin says: “The Battle of Libya is the Battle of Africa. It is a crucial part of the battle for the world. The final issues on the Thames may depend on it no less than on the Nile. “For Britain and the Empire there can be no turning back. As President Roosevelt said in a wider connection, ‘There can be no end save victory.’ Even stalemate would be a disastrous prelude to extending and multiplying perils in all Africa and throughout the Middle East. We have to conquer at all costs. “For the preservation of Britain and the Empire, for issues still larger, this is a more acid test. There could be none more searching. We shall stand the assay.”
