In the past 20 - years golf has become a pume of the people,' especially in the United States, where recently a new chapter in golfs history was' written by the grAlei-y that tried to barrack Marvin Ward, described as "No. 1 in amateur golf to-day," out of his win over P, Abbott in the final of the United States amateur championship. Because of some remarks he had made about the Omaha Field Club’s course during practice rounds, local inhabitants, numbering about 3000. displayed open hostility and tried to rattle Ward even while he was making shots. Often they wei'e unruly. The position got so bad that the president of the United States Golf Association called a halt and appealed for better sportsmanship. The appeal did little good.
