DISPUTE OVER BRIDGE

COUNCIL & DEPARTMENT For some time the Whakatane County Council and-the Public WoDepartment have been at a deadlock regarding the Whakatane River bridge at Ruatoki. The department, having completed the work, asked the council to take over the .structure. The council refused to do this, alieving that the work was faulty. It did not feel it should take rc c -o r nir.ibilify for work v'b- r ' might incur' considerable expense. The department has agreed to effect improvements, and the council has decided to take over the bridge and keep it in good repair, but lias asked for the department’s assurance that if any fault became apparent it would take the responsibility.
