MACKINNON STAKES SKIPTON’S V.R.C DERBY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Proas Assn.) (lined. Nov. 9 n.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. :i. The weather was fine and there was an enormous attendance for the opening day of the Victorian Racing Club's spring meeting at Flemington on Saturday. Kelos surprised by leading always in the Wakeful Stakes. He held off challenges by Wheat Sheaf and Two's Company to win narrowly. Hesione, a half sister to Ajax, had her third win in three starts in the Maribyrrong Plate. She has now won £2400. It was D. Munro’s third successive win. Her trainer, Bailey Payten, had won the event previously with Fidelity. Silver Mask improved on recent form, but had no hope against the placed horses. Beau Vite, who led always, secured his second successive win in the Mackinnon Stakes. He did the last half mile in 161) sees. Beau Vite now has won £213,215 in stakes. El Golea and Lucrative challenged him two furlongs from home but the New Zealander answered gamely, holding his rivals safely at the finish. Tranquil Star was outclassed. El Goiea’s effort surprised —it was a good effort. Lucrative registered a faiV performance but would have been suited better by handicap conditions. Skipton’s stamina was the deciding point in his V.R.C. Derby success. The colt was third last at one stage and challenged the leaders two furlongs from home. Skipton has now won £4642 ill stakes. He cost 250 gns. as a yearling and has registered lour wins in the last five starts. Laureate made a game effort, Skipton going away at the post. High Rond showed that his Caulfield Guineas form was all wrong and was a good third. Primavera, who finished fast, was fourth and gave a great Oaks trial. Gay Revelry had a fair race. The others were outclassed. Skipton Is trained by the New Zealander, Jack Fryer, for Mrs. J. J. Kitson. The only previous Derby winner owner by a women was Mrs. E. A. Widdis’ Patrobas. Skipton enchauced his Melbourne Cup chance but a great deal depends on how he fares over the week-end as throughout his career he has always felt the effects of a hard race. Important Success Burrabil had the most important success of his career in the Cantala Stakes. Rimveil finished well and appeared unlucky. Evergreen, who had every show, was third. High Caste was hemmed in on the rails in tne straight, otherwise he may have won. Amiable had a poor race. Crojick finished well after being last at the home turn. Son of Aurous. carrying a stone above his Cup weight, had a great trial in the Hotham Handicap. He was last at the home turn and beat Yodvarn in the last few strides. Triggerman, who weakened, was third. Saul finished fairly but the winner should hold his rivals safely in the Cup. Results:—

McCarten), 2; High Road, 8.10 (A. Breasley), 3. Nineteen started. One and a quarter lengths: 1J lengths. Primavera was fourth. Time, 2.341. Cnatala Stakes, of £2250; 1 mile.—Burrabil, 8.2 (P. Phillips), 1 ; Rimveil, 9.7 (D. Munro), 2; Evergreen, 8.4 (W. Cook). 3. Fourteen started. A neck; half a length. Hydra was fourth. Time, 1.37. Hotham Handicap, of £700; 11 miles.— Son of Aurous, 7.10 (H. Olsen), 1 : Yodvnra, 7.7 (J. Gilmore). 2; Triggerman, 7.10 (J. Thompson), 3. Eleven started. A neck; 1} lengths.; Saul was fourth. Time. 2.432 — a course record. Cavallo is suffering from a slight leg injury and whether he will start in the Melbourne Cup is in doubt. Saul pulled up well in the Hotham Handicap and is now a sure runner in the Cup. Vermont has been scratched for the Cup. Triggerman is reported to be a doubtful starter.
