Drink and Maoris
Among the problems relating to the Maori is that of intoxicating drink, and brief reference to this aspect was paid by Father Riordan, Maori missioner, in a talk to Hastings Rotarians. ‘‘l have yet to learn the name of one Maori who holds a license to retail drink,” he said. ‘‘lf then the abuse exists, and I do not deny it, are not those whose livelihood is gained in the sale of liquor in some way to blarne for whatever excesses exist? The police do their best, but they are faced with tremendous difficulties. If we could place the blame on those really responsible for this illicit traffic, and it is being carried on to an enormous extent, then we would be conferring a great benefit upon the Maori people. Mv intimate knowledge of the real state of affairs leads me to declare that the Maori in this, matter is more sinned against than sinning.
