SETBACK SUFFERED

STORE CATTLE VALUES FAIR AT MATAWHERO BEEF REMAINS FIRM The store cattle market suffered a setback at the second fair of the season held at the Matawhero yards today, when, despite the reversion to a one-day sale, the yarding was a particularly large one, totalling about 3500 head, of which 1450 were offered before lunch. Male cattle suffered most from the decline in values, which is estimated at up to 10s, sometimes more, on male cattle. Heifers and cows held their own fairly well in most instances, although here, too, values were not up to the high rates of three weeks ago. Vendors were not prepared for a reduction in prices, and particularly at the start many pens were passed on. Buyers from outside districts were not present in the same numbers as earlier in the month, although the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Wairoa were represented, northern buyers taking the bulk of the offering. The size of the cattle on offer was hardly as good as at the opening fair, while the condition in the main was above the average for the spring. Practically all of the early pens of yearling steers were passed in under the hammer, but the best of the lines sold later from £4 17s to £5 16s, with small down to £3 16s. Older steers brought from £6 4s to £B, with fewer passings, and bullocks without any great size from £8 5s to £9. Only small numbers of yearling heifers were on offer during the morning, and practically all were passed at bids ranging up to £5. only one line of fair size selling at £3 7s. The best of the older heifers, among which passings were few, ranged from £5 Is to £6 Bs, with those of medium to fair size at £4 13s and £4 14s. One pen of in-calf cows brought £5 Bs, with empty cows from £4 10s to £6 4s, with few passings.
