basketball honours COMMENTS ON PLAYERS The annual New /.calami basketball tournament. will he held in Rotorua next week ami a team has been chosen to represent Poverty Bay at the tourney. Twelve players have been selected and the following comments on their play are riven by the coach, Mrs. IT. McLeod. Defence.—Miss D. MeAneney is a quick defence who uses pood, clean passes, keeps her opponent busy and is also Rood at interception. Miss N. Miller, who has been appointed captain, is a seasoned representative player, bi-inr; reliable, good at interception and at getting the hall out of the ruck. A newcomer to representative honours is Miss S. Liivhtfoot. who has been in the reserve team for some time. She has height, intercepts well, and should improve with experience. The shortest of the four defenders is i\liss E. Birrell. who is a clean player, quick, and always jumps and intercepts well while sticking to her partner. Centres. —Miss J. Park, who has been appointed vice-captain, is an experienced player, who jumps well, keeps her partner busy, and plays a generally stood (tame. Miss O. Norberg is a sound and reliable experienced player who is always on the move and keeps her opponent moving. Another first-year representative is Miss E. Clarke, who plays a clean grime, intercepts and jumps well, and whose play should improve with experience. Miss O. Haycock is also new to Poverty Bay basketball honours, hut she has represented Canterbury and Nelson, and is a sound player and good at interception and jumping. Forwards.—Miss R. Wilkins is a splendid shot, experienced and reliable. She jumps and intercepts well and is quick to turn from attack to defence. The shortest of the goalies is Miss L. Coggrave, who is a good scout, shoots well, and has shown some improvement in her play from experience. Miss W. Miiroy is another new player who is a reliable shot, jumps well, and plays a hard,, fast game. Still another newcomer to Povtrty Bay honours is Miss P. McNeill, who is •>. sound hack goalie, good at long shots. She was one of last season’s reserves and should improve with experience.
