Bruce Ryan, Australian amateur sprinter and Newtown Rugby League wing threequarter, won a sprint championship against seven Rugby League players at Cess nock Sports Ground recently, for which there war a cash prize of £5 ss. Ryan indicated his intention to accept the prize. When it was pointed out that his amateur status was at stake, he said he felt that had already been affected by his playing Rugby League, and that he might as well accept the position. “Running means a great deal to me,” he said, “but I have decided to stick to Rugby League football.” The fact that Ryan had played Rugby League football does not necessarily makilim a professional, comments the Sydney Morning Herald. This is permitted by the \mateur Athletic Association, provided ho is prepared to make a statutory declaration that he has received no payment for his services. Competing in a foot race against professionals automatically disqualifies him, and he is no longer an amateur, irrespective of what the prize is.
