EAST INDIES DEFENCE
ROLE OF ARMED FORCES BATAVIA, Aug. 16. The Commander-in-Chief of the Netherlands East Indies Army, MajorGeneral Berenschot, addressing the People’s Council, said that the possibility of sending an East Indies expeditionary force elsewhere depended on the situation in the Indies, but that the Government considered it necessary to take the probability into account. “The Country Guards,” he said, “are being issued with automatic weapons, and instructions have been given by the authorities on how to deal with parachutist attacks. “The manufacture of various parts of machine-guns necessary to repair defective weapons has started, and also the manufacture of machine-guns and pistols. ‘Cargoes of modern weapons are arriving regularly in the Indies.”
