NO NEARER WAR

AMERICAN NATION COMMITMENTS NOT MADE ATLANTIC CONFERENCE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 19, 2.15 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 18. “I do not believe that any commitments were made at the conference between President Roosevelt and Mr. Winston Churchill which would alter the United States position towards the war. Ido not believe we have drifted any closer to actual involvement.” This statement was made by Senator T. Conally, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, after a conference at which President Roosevelt fully outlined what took place at his meeting with Mr. Churchill. Senator Connally added that speculation regarding additional aid under the Lend-and-Lease Act was wide of the mark. Actually, it would be nearer £1,000,000,000 than £2,500,000,000. Not all the money the United States spent under the lend-and-icase legislation would be tossed into a hole. “We will see we get some of it back,” he added. The New York Sun says that the need for better relations between the White House and Capitol Hill is generally realised in informed quarters in Washington. Recent developments in Congress have shown clearly .that the Legislative, if not exactly in tne mood for revolt, is suspicious of President Roosevelt’s moves. This makes a dangerous situation in a time of emergency, and the President is the only man who can mend matters. He will need to persuade the American people and Congress that he is pursuing the course best calculated to preserve the United States from the clanger that exists and grows greater. Observers believe that a fireside chat could do a great deal to accomplish such ends.
