KNITTING WOOL

CAUSES OF SHORTAGE SUPPLIES FOR FORCES (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Addressing the annual meeting of shareholders of the Wellington Woollen Manufacturers Company, the chairman, Mr. Barber, referring to the vexed question of the shortage of yarn for home knitting, said that the mill had made as much as possible without slacking on military orders, and actually the turnover for domestic wool was two and a half times greater than in 1940. There were now eight mills supplying the Defence Purchase Board with. 10,4001 bof knitting wool a month. This was allocated by the national patriotic committees to women knitting for the forces. It would be possible in normal times for New Zealand mills to cover the quantity of wool formerly imported for domestic use, but the Government orders for uniform cloth and the necessary civilian requirements had to take precedence. Pointing out the difficulty already experienced in manning the mills, Mr. Barber scouted the idea that 24 hours a day in the mills was possible.
