OFFICERS INJURED

ARMY ADVISER’S A.D.C. MOTOR COLLISION Two army officers were injured in a motor collision on the WhakataneOpotiki road, nine miles from Whakatane, at 5.50 on Saturday afternoon. They were Captain H. Whitbread, A.D.C. to General Sir Guy Williams, military adviser to the New Zealand Government, and Lieutenant G. Murray, of the Paeroa area office staff. t The car in which they were travelling was following a vehicle in which were General Williams, Brigadier C. A. West, Major T. R. Dawe, area officer at Paeroa, and Sergeant Stephenson. The party is making a visit of inspection through the Northern Military District. The second car, driven by Lieutenant Murray, collided with a truck coming in the opposite direction and driven by Mr. R. J. Mercer, Edgecumbe. The two occupants were injured and taken to the Whakatane Hospital. It was reported on Sunday night that Captain Whitbread was still unconscious and suffering from severe concussion. Lieutenant Murray, who suffered shock and abrasions, was not in a serious condition. Mr. Mercer was uninjured. The official party returned to Whakatane as a result of the accident.

Captain Whitbread, who arrived in New Zealand in June, is an Imperial Army officer, his unit being Queen Victoria’s Rifles.
