SURPLUS OF MEAT
REPLIES TO WAIROA VIEWS MINISTER’S STATEMENT (llcrnltl Correspondent.) Replying to resolutions passed at a public meeting of fanners and others, held recently in Wairoa at the instigation of the Wairoa branch of the Farmers' Union, tire Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, states: “In reply to the first resolution, I have to say that I am not aware that any freezing works are in a congested state at present. The statement which I made recently in regard to the meat storage position makes it clear 'that vve will have ample space for at least another 18 months. All the advice we have received from the United Kingdom authorities so far is to the effect that the meat at present in store will probably be shipped before there is an accumulation or next season's meat. Under these circumstances, there does not appear to be any necessity at persent lor adopting the action suggested in the resolution, which would entail sacrificing the ewe mutton at a loss of over 10s per carcase and also disorganising the meat trade in New Zealand for those farmers who always cater lor winter meat to the public. “In regard to the second resolution concerning tire weight of lambs, this problem is being considered by the Government in conjunction with the Meat Board, and a statement will be made in ample time for next season’s kill."
