NEW WOMAN M.P.
MRS. DREAVER WELCOMED CARTOON AND STOCKINGS More than 100 members of the Wellington women's branch of the Labour Party welcomed Mrs. M. Dreaver, M.P. for Waitemata, at the Wellington Trades Hall. Mrs. B. Reid, president, was chairman. Speeches of congratulation and welcome were made, by Mrs. C. Stewart, M.P., Mrs. P. Fraser, and the wives of Cabinet Ministers in the official party. All referred to Mrs. Dreaver’s long experience in public life. Mrs. Dreaver, who was presented with a bouquet of crimson anemones, referred in her reply to Minhinnick’s “kissing” cartoon, which she said had caused widespread amusement. “It has made history,” said Mrs. Dreaver, “and its fame will go further than New Zealand.” While realising the seeming importance of silk stockings, especially to the young, and while expecting deputations about remedying the stocking shortage, Mrs. Dreaver said there were many more important problems to be considered to-day. “Silk is used for parachutes, and vast numbers of these are neecled for our airmen,” she said. “Let us keep plenty of silk in the air. That is our protection.”
