Tamarau Party

A large number of friends and neighbours of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Smith, Matthew road, Tamarau, Kaiti, met recently in honour of Sapper Walter Smith, who was home on leave from Trentham camp. The guests were welcomed by Mrs. Smith and her daughter, Mrs. McLean. Later dancing on the spacious verandah was enjoyed bv the younger members of the party, while those not taking part in the dancing were entertained in the gaily decorated rooms. > Music was supplied by Mrs. Smith at the piano, while extras were played by Miss Eva Perston. An enjoyable vocal duet was given by Mrs. Smith and her son, Bobbie, and choruses were sung by the Smith family. A humorous recitation was given by Mrs. Mogford, while Miss Mihi Swann gave a spirited tap dance. After the serving of a delicious supper, Mr. Mogford, on behalf of the Tamarau residents presented the guest of honour with a money belt and a cheque. Sapper Smith suitably replied and was accorded musical honours by the guests. The organisers of the evening Mesdames Angus Campbell and L. Gray were thanked by Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Bridge and Mah-Jongg Tea A committee of five, Mesdames A. A. Whitehead A. Weymouth, W. Simpson, E. Smith and E. Rhodes, organised the outstandingly successful bridge and mah-jongg tea held in Messrs. Petties’ display room on Thursday afternoon. Forty tables were engaged, a striking tribute to the popularity of the object, the raising of funds for the benefit of the soldiers’ sewing circle sponsoned by the Poverty Bay Victoria League, and as a result of the effort £22 was realised. The function was opened by the Mayoress, Mrs. N.. H. Bull, who, in expressing her pleasure in the occasion and in the generous support accorded the undertaking, took the opportunity of complimenting the promoters on the success achieved, which was enhanced by the courtesy of Messrs. Petties, Limited. Artistic decorations of shaded Iceland poppies and camellias provided an effective setting for the many guests. The players competed for a hidden number, and the prize, which was donated by the management of the King's Theatre, was won by Mrs. Bruce Dallas. A ' delectable afternoon tea was served by the committee, with the assistance of Mrs. P. W. Willock and Misses B. Kemp, S. Barton, A. Thomas, H. Kinder, B. Willock, W. Broadhurst, and N. Mitford. The work of the committee was greatly faciliated by the hot water system installed by the Gisborne Gas Company.
