Enjoyable Dance As a finale to the season’s sports fixtures between members of the Gisborne High School Old Students’ Association and representatives of the Gisborne Fligh School an enjoyable dance was held in the Selvyn Flail on Thursday night by members of the association. There was a good attendance. The music was supplied by Mrs. W. Thomson. The excellent supper arrangements were in the hands of the lady committee members of the association. St. Luke’s Mothers’ Union Following a short service in the church conducted by the Rev. R. C. Aires, the monthly meeting of St. Luke’s Mothers’ Union was held at the home of Mrs. Halbert, Makaraka. Mrs. Barrow presided over a good attendance of members. A collection of children’s clothing, to be donated to the Gisborne branch of the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild, was received from the members. The first of a series of talks on the Bible, given by the Rev. J. D. G. Hodgson, was followed with interest by a very appreciative audience. A discussion followed, and questions on the various aspects of the talk were answered. Warm expressions of thanks were conveyed to the speaker by the Rev. R. C. Aires and Mrs. Barrow, and the hospitality of Miss Halbert and Mrs. L. Eade also was suitably acknowledged. Manutuke Girl Guides The annual meeting of the Manutuke Girl Guide Committee was held at the mission house on Tuesday, Mrs. Andrew, acting-divisional commissioner, presiding. Miss Humphreys, district secretary, and Mrs. J. S. Nugent, were also present. The report presented by Miss Taylor, captain of the company, showed steady progress in the company and badge work. Guides had attended special church parades, assisted at a “bring and buy” for the company funds, and also at a stall at the annual church bazaar. The report of the Brownie Pack was read by Miss Buscke, acting Brown Owl, and proved that the Brownies were keenly interested in their work. The report of the work of the committee during the year was read by the secretary, Miss Newman. Mrs. Andrew congratulated Miss Taylor and her acting-lieutenant, Marie Brown,' and Miss Buscke, on the splendid reports sent in, and thanked the committee for the help given. The retiring committee was reelected, and Mrs. Preston was unanimously elected president and was congratulated on holding the position for the past 16 years. The commissioner then inspected the Guides and Brownies on parade, gave a helpful talk to each, and presented service stars and badges. Afternoon tea was served in the mission room.
