CENTRE BOWLING YEAR

PATRIOTIC FUNDS HELPED SUCCESSFUL TOURNEYS Over £25 was raised for the rehabilitation fund as a result of a bowling tournament organised by the Gisborne-East Coast Bowling Centre during the past year, stated the annual report of the centre to be presented to members at the annual meeting on Monday night. Sympathy is extended in the report to all bowlers whose sons have been killed while overseas and tin* hope is expressed that many others will soon be safe back in New Zealand. Regret is expressed by the centre at the death of Mr. D. G. Robertson, the late secretary. As a gesture to his memory a handsome shield has been purchased and it is hoped that the T). G. Robertson Shield will always act as a reminder of the esteem in which he was held. The vacancy caused by the death of Mr Robertson was filled by the appointment of Mr. J. S. Waite, but, unfortunately, a breakdown in health compelled him to relinquish the position. Several successful tournaments were conducted by the centre during the year, among these being the inter-club games for the Fisher Cup, which was won by the Gisborne club; the Yelverton Pennant competition for the shield donated by the late Mr. T. Corson, which was won by the Gisborne club for the third time in succession, and the fourth time in six years; the Peace Shield tournament, for which 36 teams competed, a record, and which was won by a Poverty Bay rink ; and the thirty-second Burton Cup tournament at Easter, which was won by a Gisborne club rink with a Gisborne club rink also runners-up. Other tournaments were conducted in Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay and Wairoa. Entries for the champion of champion events were well up to standard. Honours for the season were annexed by the following:—Champion Singles.—Senior: H. Wootton (Kahutia). Intermediate: S. Gooch (Kahutia). Junior: K. Powell (Tolaga Bay). Champion Pairs.—Senior: A. Slight and S. McKenzie (s), (Poverty Bay). Junior: W. Keith and F. Mathewson (s), (Gisborne). Champion Rinks. —Senior: D. S. Thompson, J. Buzza. A. Slight and S. McKenzie (s), (Poverty Bay). 'Junior: Hauwaho, Powell, Thornton and Smith (s), (Tolaga Bay). The financial statement of the centre shows that after writing oil' £l7 on items of plant there is still a small surplus. Expenditure and income were on a par with the previous season.
