MATAWHERO PRICES EWE HOGGETS AT 26/2 WETHERS PASSED 25/3 Store sheep prices at the Matawhero stock sale to-day were the highest ot the season. Values showed an improvement, and the prices were assisted by an offering that was mainly of good quality, and included some exceptional lines. The yarding was the largest winter offering for some years, and totalled over 5000, of which 4300 were offered by 12.30 p.m. Selling proceeded throughout lunch, Waikato. Thames Valley, Bay of Plenty and Hawke’s Bay buyers were among the large attendance. Wether hoggets comprised the bulk of the yarding, and in two instances well-grown forward sorts sold at 20s, with another lot at 20s 7d, while others with size and condition ranged from 17s 3d to 19s Id and smaller sorts from 13s 7d to 16s. Black-faced hoggets brought 14s 7d and 15s Id. Ewe hoggets were keenly competed for. and they sold from 22s Id to 26s 2d, the latter price being for a particularly fine lot from Messrs. Judd Bros. , Wethers participated well in the advanced rates, and. apart from one lot at 18s lOd, the prices ranged from 22s Id to 245, while one line of big fat and forward sorts was passed in at 25s 3d. Breeding ewes also sold well, a line of 5 and 6-year-olds reaching 19s Id and selling down to 13s sd, while aged sorts sold from 8s 3d to 11s fid. A small line of ewes-with lambs, the second of the season to reach the Matawhero yards, was disposed of at 21s fid. The quality, too, was an improvement-, and most of the yarding of 400,. all ewes, except one pen of lambs, comprised heavy to fairly heavy sorts. The best of the ewes ranged from 12s 4d to 13s Id, with the lighter sorts from 10s Id to 11s id. Second quality ewes sold from 9s Id to 10s id. A pen of lambs brought 18s 3d.
