RIFLE DESTROYED
IMPRESSMENT DISLIKED A man who destroyed his .30:: calibre rifie before he received an impressment notice from the Govern ment, Keir- liardie Samms, appeared in. the Christchurch Police Court before Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., charged with failing to give notice of the destruction of the rifle to the authorised arms officer. Samms pleaded guilty and was fined 20s and costs. Sub-Inspector E. T. C. Turner, who prosecuted, said that Samms was sent an impressment notice for the rifle from the National Service Department. Samms wrote back saying that he had destroyed the rifie. “Inquiries were made and Samms made a statement to the police in which he said that, because of his holding conscientious views, he had anticipated the impressment ’ notice and destroyed the rifle, 'throwing it in pieces into the licathcote River,” said Mr. Turner. Samms said that he had not been aware that he had to notify the destruction of the rifle. He did so immediately the impressment notice was sent.
