CRETE EVACUEES WOUNDED REMOVED LIST OF CASUALTIES (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, announced last night that while still large numbers were unaccounted for, the news that day suggested a larger number than 15;00Cl
mentioned the previous day had been evacuated from Crete.
“This is good news,” said Mr. Nash, “but until they are checked up I cannot give the exact figures. Of the number of our men who were on the island, some thousands have arrived in Egypt, including some 768 wounded and there are still approximately 2800 of our men unaccounted for. Some of these may still arrive, but in the meantime they are unaccounted for. The majority can probably correctly he regarded as missing.
“Immediately further advice is received in regard to every soldier, the next-of-kin will be notified and the information later made public. At present all the information we have shows that 2800 are unaccounted for."
The only Gisborne soldier in the latest list of casualties is:—

Advice has been received that Private lan D. Bell, third son of Mr. J. D. Bell, Gisborne, who has been in Greece and Crete, is safe.
Cabled advice has been received by Mrs. Frank Barker, Wainui Beach, that her son. Lance-Bombardier Derek Barker, has been safely evacuated from Crete. He is with an anti-tank corps.
Sergeant L. J. Winstanley, whose name appeared in yesterday’s issue is believed to be a prisoner of war, was a dental mechanic in Gisborne for several years. During that time he was vice-captain of tho Gisborne Rowing Club, and was a representative oarsman on many occasions.
