GAMBLING DEPLORED
PATRIOTIC FUNDS
BAPTISTS' CRITICISM
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day
Delegates from the Baptist churches of Wellington, Nelson, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki met at Lower Hutt over the week-end for the annual central auxiliary meeting. The officers elected were: President, Rev. L. A. North; vice-presidents, Revs. J. Russell Grave, E. W. Batts and Mr. H. W. Milner; hon. secretary, Mr. Will Carey; hon. treasurer, Mr. C. Collins.
A resolution was carried expressing the unanimous conviction that the prevalence of gambling constituted a serious menace to national life, and noting with particular shame the resort to gambling in the interests of patriotic funds, calling upon the people to abstain absolutely, and urging that all responsible for the raising of patriotic funds never again to sanction the using of the streets for gambling in the interests of the cause. A resolution was also passed declaring the use of intoxicating liquors to be a waste of national resources.
